"James Raggi's Random Esoteric Creature Generator is both a collection of random attribute tables and a manifesto for making your games mysterious and magical again. This slim volume packs a lot in its thirty-two pages. Aimed at GMs of earlier editions of D&D and its retro-clones, the book can, with a little work, be adapted to almost any d20-based game, and with a little more work, to almost any fantasy RPG.

At first, you might think "oh, random tables? I can find these on the internet/old source books/make them up myself." And you'd be correct; you can find tables similar to these in many places. But it's not just the tables themselves; there's a logic behind how they're connected that makes this more than just a collection of randomly-determined attributes. For instance, the table of special abilities determines the number of rolls by how many hit dice the creature has, modified by a percentile die roll. A creature with 5 HD has a 50% chance of having special abilities, say, but for every full 10% less you roll on the percentiles, it gains another, so if you rolled 28, it would have 3 abilities. This kind of reasoning ties the tables together more than the "little from column A, little from column B" approach that I've seen in other generators, and although the results still vary wildly, the logic behind the process makes everything I've rolled so far playable.

The upshot of this is, you, as a GM, can create an encounter that your players will have no idea how to handle, and they'll have to use their wits again, experimenting, investigating, and possibly running away to fight another day--the way it should be when adventurers wander into the unknown. "The trick," Raggi points out, "is to make the players treat their gaming experience as brand new." To this end, he also includes a section on Putting It All Together, a short essay about how to handle weird creatures in your fantasy games. While I won't divulge too much here, the core of his message is to make even the 'common' monster encounters unique and important. And for me, that's the point of fantasy RPGs; if you aren't marveling at something new and mysterious, why are you even playing in the fantasy genre?

My only criticism of this volume, and it's a minor one I admit, is the physical layout. I would have preferred to see something digest-sized, rather than the 10.5" x 8.2" format. That would have made the book more durable and portable. As it is, the book is a little delicate; my copy came with a little bend in the corner. Nonetheless, that's a nit pick. The book is perfectly usable as is.

• Last summer, I read Prof Isserman's recent book on the history of American climbing and mountaineering, Continental Divide. I loved it! As a former rock climber and mountaineer from Washington State, I have devoured climbing literature since I was in college. When I was about eight, I read a story taken from James Ramsay Ullman’s history of the British efforts in the 1920s to climb Mt. Everest in the Himalaya and was fascinated with the story of Mallory and Irvine who disappeared in a cloud at over $27,000 ft on the northwest ridge of Mt. Everest in 1924. I read more, learned climbing basics in the early ‘70s and climbed for 20 years. I have not been in the sharp end of a rope on steep rock or a serious mountain in over 20 years, but I have continued to wander through the mountains of the American west and Canada and devour climbing literature.
  
  Having been so impressed with Continental Divide, I obtained a copy of Fallen Giants last fall from and read it straight through in a few weeks. Having been a devotee of mountaineering writing since the early 1970s, I have owned maybe 200 or more books about climbing, including well over a dozen about the many efforts to ascend Everest from 1920 to 1953 and the successful and unsuccessful attempts to summit on the other thirteen 8,000 meter peaks. I had read many of the authors Prof. Isserman discussed and cited in Fallen Giants, and was familiar generally about the highest peaks. Even so, I really liked his treatment of the efforts to climb those fourteen 8,000ers. But I knew nothing of the ascents of literally hundreds of very worthy peaks in the Himalaya and Karakoram ranging from 20,000 to 26,000 feet and Prof. Isserman’s research was categorical and impressive. I loved the stories about obsessed people who traveled so far and tied so hard under terrible conditions back in the middle to late 1800s. The stories about life or death struggles on the much lesser peaks was as worthwhile as the those of tallest like Everest and K-2. He brought these struggles to life in a way that strongly affected me, as a former passionate but mediocre mountaineer. But the stories will impress the arm-chair mountaineer who as never climbed anything of note. Unlike one prior reviewer who disliked the hundreds of foot notes and the very large bibliography in Fallen Giants, they demonstrated to me the enormous research Isserman conducted and his grounding of fine details of the stories. I rated this with 5 stars.
  
  I am looking forward to Isserman’s next climbing book.
• I enjoyed this book more than any climbing book I've read in many years. It is superbly written and meticulously researched and annotated. As I approached this book, I felt its size and heft, looked at the text and saw the smallish font and the amount of print on each page, and I thought, oops, this might be a tough slog.
  
  Nothing could be further from the truth. I'd been in a spate of reading thriller novels and this book was more un-put-down-able than nearly every one of those novels. This book was a page-turner throughout and only indulged in tiny doses of navel gazing, when called for by the individuals being described. This is the story of mountaineering in the Himalaya from the earliest historical accounts to the 2000s, told like a fireside tale. Gripping and full of life.
  
  It would help to have some knowledge of the climbing history and the terrain covered to get the most out of this book; but it really does provide plenty of detail. As with any NF book that moves across the land in its story, it's a good idea to have an atlas or maps handy if you need to orient yourself.
  
  The emphasis is on the fourteen 8000-meter peaks, their first ascents, and other of the very highest peaks in the range. This is understandable, since these were, for nearly the entire history of Himalayan climbing, the greatest challenges Just getting to the top of the greatest peaks. They were the lodestones of almost all climbers until the 1960s. Therefore, many of the smaller, more technical peaks are not covered (though some of the most famous and earliest are.) The book also focuses on other firsts, such as first ascents by climbers of various nationalities and by women.
  
  By the time of the 1970s and beyond, when the range was opened to far more expeditions (and commercial trips) a severe selection of which climbs were to be covered had to be made. I think the climbs covered in the later periods reflect the interest of most readers of climbing narrative. You may not find your favorite ascent from the 1970s through the 2000s covered in detail (or at all); but a good selection of "firsts", news-worthy, and, especially, influential climbs are covered well. The intent of the book seems to be to indicate key climbs that drove the mountaineering ethic and climbing style in the Himalaya (including commercialization); and the authors accomplished this well. And did it in a very entertaining and readable style. Bravo!
  
  Highest recommendation.
  
  Regarding the charge of anglo-centrism Well, yes, they tailored the book for the British and American reader. And they primarily used feet for elevations and miles for distances. Tailoring your book for the intended audience? Wow, who knew?!

• Like the Keto diet, these provide some quick and easy meals. The description of the diet highlights and the goal of the cookbook was good. Given the price, I did not expect a lot of color pages but it would have been nice to have some key pages with images of the top recipes.

The book contains of informative part, which talks about keto diet at all, and also it contains of myriad of different recipes of delicious healthy food. Using tips from the book you will be able to lose weight without any serious difficulties. All information is clear and coherent, so the book is understandable even for beginners. After many lost battles, Roosevelt won his war with the Court, launching a Constitutional revolution that went far beyond anything he envisioned.
In The Supreme Court Reborn, esteemed scholar William E. Leuchtenburg explores the critical episodes of the legal revolution that created the Court we know today. Leuchtenburg deftly portrays the events leading up to Roosevelt's showdown with the Supreme Court. Committed to laissez faire doctrine, the conservative "Four Horsemen"--Justices Butler, Van Devanter, Sutherland, and McReynolds, aided by the swing vote of Justice Owen Roberts--struck down one regulatory law after another, outraging Roosevelt and much of the Depression-stricken nation. Leuchtenburg demonstrates that Roosevelt thought he had the backing of the country as he prepared a scheme to undermine the Four Hoursemen. Famous (or infamous) as the "Court-packing plan," this proposal would have allowed the president to add one new justice for every sitting justice over the age of seventy. The plan picked up considerable momentum in Congress; it was only after a change in the voting of Justice Roberts (called "the switch in time that saved nine") and the death of Senate Majority Leader Joseph T. Robinson that it shuddered to a halt. Rosevelt's persistence led to one of his biggest legislative defeats. Despite the failure of the Court-packing plan, however, the president won his battle with the Supreme Court; one by one, the Four Horsemen left the bench, to be replaced by Roosevelt appointees. Leuchtenburg explores the far-reaching nature of FDR's victory. As a consequence of the Constitutional Revolution that began in 1937, not only was the New Deal upheld (as precedent after precedent was overturned), but also the Court began a dramatic expansion of Civil liberties that would culminate in the Warren Court. Among the surprises was Senator Hugo Black, who faced widespread opposition for his lack of qualifications when he was appointed as associate justice; shortly afterward, a reporter revealed that he had been a member of the Ku Klux Klan. Despite that background, Black became an articulate spokesman for individual liberty.

• What is enough? When I lived in East Africa, I marveled that so many families lived in very small spaces. In the years between the World Wars, an average home in Milwaukee might have enclosed 600 square feet. More recently, McMansions became common. Now the Tiny House movement is reclaiming sane living spaces.
  Yet the point of small homes is not miniaturization. In this memoir of house-sitting in a rural, off-the-grid micro home, Bill Powers reminds us that we can live more simply and more richly by living small. No indulger in wishful thinking, he also elucidates the difficulties of living a simpler life in what he describes as a "flat world." His focus, however, is not about living the simple life--in the manner of Helen and Scott Nearing--it is about our place as part of the whole we call the natural world. By turns provocative and challenging, these pages are not easily put aside and forgotten.
• I loved this book. The author, in my opinion, really put forth an interesting, informative idea for living in a more gentle, back to basics way. Not everyone would want to live without electricity, without indoor plumbing and toilet, but anyone who reads this book is already interested in trying to be more in tune with the earth. I think that you can learn a lot about ecologically safe practices and even if you do not practice this style of living, you can take away some great ideas from the book. The author really threw himself into this bare to the bones lifestyle, even giving up a car to just use a bicycle but he admits that he probably wouldn't live this way forever. It's not for everyone and this book certainly will change the way you think about every day needs. I found it very interesting. I would recommend this book to anyone who already tries to live a simple, earth friendly life and has an open mind about it.
• Powers' book covers so much of interest, from land use, to labor, agriculture, agribusiness, permaculture, His telling of the human relationships is also compelling. He takes us from a 12x12 foot square cabin to issues of world peace and planetary survival with compassion, reflection and rigorous honesty. His spiritual take is offered clearly and without push. I borrowed this from the library, and then purchased the book -- and nominated it for my college's common reading program. Yep. I liked it that much. Timely, too.
• What a great book about living differently. I could really feel the author's experience as he learned to live in this tiny house. I tend to pass along all my books when I am done with them but this one I kept because I'll reread it and because looking at it on my bookshelf reminds me of the lessons I received while reading it.
• Having grown up during the 1930's on a farm that had no electricity and no running water I have experienced the life that Bill Powers lived in that 12 x 12 cabin. Our house was probably 700 sq ft and we had 10 people living in that house. We lived off the land, growing vegetables to eat, and killed hogs and calves, and chickens for meat. I milked cows every morning before I went to school and at night too. We gathered eggs to eat when the chicken would lay them. It was a simple life but a hard life. We all worked in the fields in the summers. We never had a vacation. When we moved on the farm in 1936 my father didn't have a car. We moved to the farm from another farm in a wagon with mules. I was four years old.
  There are pros and cons about this kind of life. It is a simple life to live off the land, but it is a hard life that I don't to repeat. I am 78 years old and I think back to those days, and would take electricity and running water any time! But there has to be a way we can have some of both lives. I don't want the Tyson Chicken farms. I buy my eggs from a local farmer and my vegetables and berries and fruits when I can get them, from local farmers. I buy meat from a small town meat market who buys grass fed meat...local ranchers..and I see the cattle on the farms around here grazing in the fields and it makes me feel good. I buy milk from a local dairy that does not add hormones to the mild. I pay more for it, but I love the taste and I know it is pure.
  There is way to live a simple life. You just have to make up your mind how to do it!
  I liked the book and I liked how Bill Powers intertwines his personal life into the narrative of writing about global warming, permaculture and the environment.

• 12x12 opened the door to a world I know little of - living off the grid. Reading I became entranced with this lifestyle of sustainability and deep listening. The idea of living in a 12x12 appeals to me. There were times years ago when I lived in a yoga ashram where my living quarters were about that size yet the eating and living places were outside my door. The beauty of life, simple and complete, without as many encumbrances as I currently live with continues to call to me. Simplify!!!
• As I am searching for a new book to read I came across this one for sale. I had to write a review. This book is so down to earth and so inspiring. You feel like you are there and can see the entire description as if it is right in front of you. I loved this book and will remember this one forever. I hope to have my own "12 x 12" some day. • Looking back on the last 50 years of my life, one of best things that ever happened to me was my wife's uncle telling me to buy and read this book. That was a year before I shipped out for Vietnam.
  
  A few years after I returned, I remembered his words when we found out he had passed and I bought the book. We had two kids, paycheck to paycheck, and no savings. I read the book and it hit home; hard. Slowly, week-by-week, we started to build savings. Now, we have a good retirement, well off and secure. This book started it off.
  
  Easy to read and understand, timeless message. This book should be required reading for all school kids. It doesn't espouse greed like Think and Grow Rich. It simply teaches that you already have the ability to grow your prosperity from what you already have.
  
  READ THIS BOOK and change your life forever.
• I buy this book by the case and give it to all the young people (14-25) in my neighborhood. It's an easy read and gives seven basic principles on saving and investing money. I was raised on the 10% rule and have passed it on to the next generation. It is written in parable form, so it's interesting as well as instructive. I highly recommend this book of wisdom for the youth in anyone's life.
• I've read this book many times and I try to read it every year so as to refresh my memory and ensure my path. When I first read this, it was an amazing epiphany and I immediately took action. I was broke, about to lose my house, and looking for a way out of the hole I'd dug myself into. The rules within this book works well! I live in Hawaii now, in a nice suburban house, without worry of money. I am always surprised when I'm handed my next paycheck because I no longer count the days to each. Many thanks to the writer, the translator, the archeologist, and of course, the Babylonians!
• I read this book years ago. As a result I listened to one piece of advice and now will have a comfortable retirement.
  Because I was a Christian I believed that I should tithe 10% of my income. I was tithing on my net income, not my gross. In my heart I knew that I should be tithing on my gross iincome. After reading this book, I decided that I should tithe on my gross, but in addition I should tithe (10%) to myself as well. That retirement is what got me through the crash in 2008 and has allowed me to purchase a small retirement property.
• Just thought I should write this review as a warning to others. The Richest Man in Babylon is one of my favorite books. It's a great "back to the basics" look at finances. When I'm off with my finances, I dig out my copy of this book. I thought about doing a study group with some members of my church. So, I wanted to check this one out because the "Now Revised and Updated for the 21st Century" part of the title led me to believe that it would be a more modern version maybe removing the thee's and thou's... kinda like an NIV vs KJV of the Bible. I WAS MISTAKEN!!!
  
  It's both taller and wider than my current beat up version but the font they used is soooo small that I couldn't bring myself to make a detailed comparison- unlike the cover and back cover which are huge in comparison. They jammed 160 pages into 88 POORLY!!! I've never sent a book back before, but this one must go back!!!
  
  So get the book, but not this version!!!
• First off, this was probably the 20th book about (finance, getting rich, making $, etc) I read. For my adult life I struggled with $, debt, bills, etc.
  While the info contained within this book certainly is no secret, the story spoke to me in a way that nothing else had. Maybe it was the context, language, or the historical time tested theory, I'm not sure but whatever it was, it resonated.
  I started reading this book a few years ago in a hotel room on Christmas eve.
  Something about the stories, lessons, and history really spoke to me. I made a commitment and the following year saw me get out of the hamster wheel of debt that I'd been running in since I was 18.... And establish a respectable savings.
  Some won't appreciate the stories, some may dismiss the lessons as "common sense" (despite the fact that they aren't applying them and are broke.)
  Other stories, lessons, formats, may speak better to you.... That's fine.
  But for me,
  This book along with the millionaire mind are head and shoulders the two books that have made the biggest impact on me.
• 3 stars does not mean it is a bad book. Definitely worth a read, especially if you are interested in personal finance without the droll of a finance textbook. Three stars means that the beginning of the book was far stronger than the end, and after halfway the information started repeating a bit and the anecdotes were not as compelling as the beginning ones. However, this book was definitely unique and a quick read with lots of good information that still holds truth now.

  My three year old is right in the middle of problem solving and learning how to count, so this book is great for him. The stickers also help him with his fine motor skills, even though some of the extra stickers like the raindrops were way too small for him to handle. The main stickers are easy for him to work with. Also, I have to get the stickers off for him, but it’s good practice for him to put them on the right spot.
  
  Also, I wouldn’t say the stickers are reusable. It’s still a great learning activity book!
• This book is fun and kept my daughter busy for days until it fell completely apart after the first use. One of the sticker page fell out after we finished the first 3 pages. I thought it was okay as long as other pages were still bound together. But, pages after pages fell out as we use it more, as you can see from the picture. It might be easier for kids to use the sticker? but there is definitely some binding issues with the book. Anyways, besides this, it is an overall good activity book for kids.
• My grand-daughter (almost three) had a great time with this book. The stickers were easy to peel and she enjoyed the fun pages. Very cute
• Maybe my just-turned-2-year-old granddaughter—brilliant as she seems to me!—is a bit behind other 2-years old, but she can’t do many of the activities in this book—counting, matching, maze-following, adding. I had hoped to use it for a long plane trip. Maybe later.
• These aren't really "reusable" but rather re-stickable if you make an error. There's also something like 300 so it really doesn't matter.
  
  The activities are clever and cute and really inspire kids to think while they are having fun.
• Book itself is good, but it is falling apart, every page of it. You will need to have plenty of scotch tape to keep it together.

La tecnología del hormigón armado en obras de arquitectura es, entre otros aspectos de la misma importancia, un caso especial de la dosificación de mezclas dado el carácter de estructura resistente del mismo. Es esta característica resistente la que desde siempre ha exigido en la construcción del hormigón armado máxima precisión y control en la selección de sus componentes como en su dosificación. Esta tarea actualmente se ejecuta mediante camiones equipados con hormigoneras mezcladoras que llevan a la obra el hormigón elaborado y desde los que también se lo eleva y proyecta con equipos especiales.

Este factor no exime a los arquitectos del conocimiento que exige este material de especial complejidad y singulares posibilidades expresivas y constructivas, estando esta última en particular en una situación de permanente innovación teórica y/o tecnológica. Sin embargo este avance en sus metodologías de concepción y construcción no invalida los fundamentos en los que se basa el hormigón y por lo tanto, son ellos precisamente el tema central de esta publicación.

En consecuencia este eBook está enfocado en presentar de forma sintética los conocimientos básicos del hormigón por la importancia que los mismos tienen para el correcto diseño, cálculo y construcción de estructuras donde es un componente privilegiado. Los objetivos y el alcance del análisis que aquí se hace los determinan la pertenencia de esta publicación a la Serie de Construcciones de carácter introductorio para alumnos de escuelas y facultades de Arquitectura.

Igual que en todos los eBooks de la Serie aludida, el desarrollo del tema se hace a partir de definiciones teóricas, que si bien tienen carácter de aserto, pueden ser revisadas y/o actualizadas por las permanentes innovaciones científicas y tecnológicas citadas, junto a clasificaciones más o menos tradicionales que permiten organizar el análisis como asimismo el muestreo de algunos ejemplos de patologías desarrolladas y verificadas por técnicos especialistas de la empresa Loma Negra de la República Argentina.
