The Easter Rising is THE seminal event in Irish nationalism and one of the key turning points in Irish History. No event captures the imagination as this does. It is a story populated by idealists, poets, union activists and soldiers. In this short history, John Dorney tackles the complex happenings of the event itself and, by putting the conflict in context, offers a lucid explanation of the passions and motives that drove Irishmen into arms against Britain when their fellow Irishmen fought on the fields of Flanders in British uniforms. About The Author John Dorney is the author of The Story Of The Easter Rising, 1916, The Story of The Irish War Of Independence and The Story Of The Irish Civil War. John was born in Dublin in August 1980 and grew up in the southern suburb of Rathfarnham. He studied history and politics in University College Dublin and completed a Masters Thesis on the 16th century Irish chieftain Florence McCarthy entitled, Florence MacCarthy and the conquest of Gaelic Munster, 1560-1640.

"The books in this series, except for the book on the Potato Famine, have all been outstanding. John Dorney continues that tradition in this overview. It is well documented and well written. The dynamics of the personalities and politics are clearly described."

The Story Of The Easter Rising 1916 John Dorney 9781907694042 Books Reviews

  • As an introduction to the 1916 Easter Uprising or as a component of a more general approach to the history of Modern Ireland, this is a really fine book. It is short but manages to touch all the important facets of the rebellion, even those which prompt disagreement among historians and contemporary politicians. It will not push a book like Max Caulfield's "The Easter Rebellion" off the required reading lists of those who want all the facts and a deeper understanding of 1916 but for any who need a well written and concise overview, it is just right. As the 100th anniversary of the rebellion approaches, there may be many who want just what Dorney offers. It is precisely this asset which led me to purchase 75 copies for a group of Irish Americans who will be visiting Ireland on the occasion of the Centennial celebration. As a long time educator, now retired, I could see this book as an important addition to reading lists in courses on European, British and, of course, Irish History.
  • Covers the various groups involved in the uprising. Dorney gives a great analysis of the military failures as well as how the seeds of rebellious grew out of the post uprising reactions of the British.
  • While having some insightful comments and observations, this work is more an overview rather than a short history, I purchased the kindle edition for $2.99 --it was an okay value, glad I didn't purchase the paperback. The Max Caulfield book on the Easter Rebellion is the definitive work (cited numerous times by this author) and is well worth the investment for anyone interested in Irish history.
  • The books in this series, except for the book on the Potato Famine, have all been outstanding. John Dorney continues that tradition in this overview. It is well documented and well written. The dynamics of the personalities and politics are clearly described.
