Your church may have many members, but does every member have a purpose? In Doing Church as a Team, Pastor Wayne Cordeiro underscores that church numbers are insignificant when every individual is not involved. However, if the team members work together as one toward a single, clearly defined goal, anything is possible--and everyone shares in the joys and rewards of success!

Doing Church as a Team Wayne Cordeiro 9780764214493 Books Reviews

  • In the book, Cordeiro helps Christians have a better understanding of how to become more like the person or church Jesus created them to be. This book can also serve as a discipleship and Christian leadership training material. Cordeiro promotes the healthy Christian leadership by using the metaphor “one will make his/her candle brighter by lightening that of another. Cordeiro provides ways and ideas to help God’s people serve and work together in a united rhythm. He reminds Christians that God’s salvation it’s not all about them but what God wants to do through them. As the same time, Cordeiro stresses the importance of evangelism by reminding Christians that they should do the God’s right assignment, which is bring the lost to Him.

With the majority of the readers of this book being believers, I would encourage Cordeiro to write more about ideas to help believers live out the plan of God, rather than saying God will find others more willing to jump in if people opt out of His plan. God builds us, and each one of us is in His plan even before we are born. Another critique, I think what people are doing and what they are becoming are equally important. Cordeiro statement of God being more interested in what Christians are becoming is questionable. It depends on people. I think we also need to be careful about Cordeiro’s answers to help make the gospel credible to those who live in your community. Non-believers may believe in Christians rather than Jesus because of what Christians do like sports program, cleaning the park, and such in the community. I know many people “believe” in Jesus not because of what He did for them, but because of how other Christians help them. We must always aware that we need to bring the lost to Jesus, not people.

This book is the valuable guide for those who are willing to serve God as a team, and the fine material for teamwork leadership training. It could also serve as a great reference book to the evangelism and discipleship training.

In all, this book is the 5 star read.

  • Summary Cordiero keeps the central premise of the book concise and consistent. The entire body of the church is a team, and the entire church needs to be utilized for effective ministry. The first three chapters help to define what the church is supposed to be, and how individual Christians fit into that idea. Following that, are a succession of chapters that focus on helping a person go about identifying where on the team they belong. For example, he uses an acronym DESIGN to delineate the basic parts of what makes each individual unique on the team. Then he shows a person can be put into a proper role depending on what they are like. The following chapters build up how to raise a leader from among the church as well as how the team should best be constructed. All of these things focusing back on that single premise for the book that is how to ensure that every individual is working towards the edification of the church as a whole.
Critique The book does a fairly effective job at it’s goal of encouraging the church body to focus on the individual’s fit in the church community. As this is one of the biggest failings in the church, it is important for this point to be hit again and again until the church fallows through. That being said, it felt a bit light in some areas. The central premise is something that is repeated throughout the new testament. It does not seem like a particularly big secret. For some aspects, such as how to properly working on teamwork, a book such as “The Performance factor Unlocking the Secrets of Teamwork” by Pat MacMillan seem to fit the bill more significantly.
Contribution This book, overall, is still a very effective work. It is probably the single most important point for a church to follow. Until such a time that any given church is effectively working as a team, this is still a valuable resource to be utilized.
  • I read this for a class that I was taking on pastoral ministry. I found it to be helpful, encouraging and challenging. I can be reluctant to turn over ministry to newer believers in the land where I minister as a missionary, but Wayne Cordeiro reminds us that leaders are there if we look for and develop them. Not only does he encourage us as ministry leaders to do so, he provides some great practical ideas for making that happen. This may not come about as easily as he makes it seem in the book, but it's a challenge worth stepping up to.
  • A decent resource to stimulate discussion on leadership and team building. Based on much modern leadership techniques of core values and example.
  • This book has been a constant 'go to' ever since I read it years ago. I just bought another copy for a friend in leadership in ministry. The ideas presented are effective and easily implemented in any size group.
  • Pastor Wayne shares his success in touching and encouraging people to live kingdom values. He teaches us the importance of following Jesus Christ and loving people with an attitude that emphasizes heart first.

Doing Church as a Team encourages each one of us to use our indivdual gifts together as a team to share the Goods News in a powerful way and touch lives for Jesus Christ
  • I got this book and wasn't able to put it down. Easy to read and very informative. Shows you how a church cannot function as an individual. Its a team and this book shows how you can put that into effect
