While photographing the Congregation Montefiore Cemetery in Las Vegas, New Mexico, in 1985, Cary Herz first heard whispers about "the other people." Thus began a twenty-year search for descendants of crypto-Jews, the Sephardic Jews who were forced to convert to Catholicism during the Spanish and Portuguese Inquisitions centuries ago. Many openly professed Catholicism, but continued to practice the Jewish faith privately.

Herz's photographs and the accompanying essays honor the people whose ancestors, through families' oral histories and genealogical records, knew about their heritage. Other New Mexican Hispanics have recently begun to explore their families' customs and are only beginning to examine their possible blended lineage. To help complete her exploration, Herz sought out symbols--gravesites, artifacts, and icons--that might point toward the presence of the descendants of crypto-Jews who came to the New World. There has recently been a renewed interest in crypto-Jews, as DNA tests have revealed the Jewish heritage of a number of Hispanic New Mexicans.

  • When Sephardic Jews left Spain after the Inquisition, some went to the Americas. But they soon discovered that the Inquisition had a branch in Mexico City and were imprisoning, torturing and killing Spanish Jews who were trying to hide their identity. This book has lots of photos, personal stories and history about the highland areas where these Jews tried to hide. I really enjoyed it, especially since I worked as a caseworker in the late 1960's in the area.
  • Beautiful story as seen in person at exhibition in Sante Fe. Very well done photographic history of yet another persecution of the Jews- our oldest and most precious faith
  • This is a well written and very informative book about the survival of a tenacious people and about a part of the hidden history of the state of New Mexico. I would recommend it to any one interested in Jewish history, Sephardic Judaism, Crypto-Jews, Spanish culture and New Mexico history.
  • Informative narrative but, more importantly, the book is filled with the fabulous photographs of Cary Herz.
  • This book has lots of nice pictures and does bring out a lot of interesting points one can look for in their own family. Things such as traditions that cannot be explained or symbols on head stones, names from Holy Scriptures and others.
    It is worth reading.
  • I'll admit I am biased but this book finally puts a real human face on this southwest phenomena. Haunting images of a living glimmer of an almost forgotten people. Cary Herz performs a mitzvah by remembering us and in a small way provides help along the road to redemption of this small remnant.
  • includes picture of the temple where my husband and I were married. Brings back lots of memories. Interesting sights in this book.
  • Very interesting read, beautiful and intriguing photography!
