The Wind Off the Small Isles is beloved author Mary Stewart's long-lost novella, now available in paperback for the first time in 40 years and perfect for fans of Anya Seton, Daphne du Maurier and Santa Montefiore.

1879. Lanzarote. A wealthy young woman elopes with an impoverished fisherman, leaving her family distraught.

1968. Perdita West, secretary to a famous author, visits Lanzarote on a research trip and begins to fall in love with the unusual, beautiful little island. When, while snorkelling, a landslide traps Perdita in an underwater cave, her efforts to save herself will reveal what happened to the ill-fated couple who fell in love at this very spot almost a century ago . . .

This paperback edition also includes the recently rediscovered short story 'The Lost One', first published in Woman's Journal in 1960, and set against the backdrop of unfenced country and dark winding valleys at night.

"For a Mary Stewart fan, finding two new stories, after all this time, was a joy. I won't go into details about the plot because they can be found in other places. I will warn potential readers that these are more short stories than novellas. I believe The Lost One is my favorite of the two, because it contains not only a bit of mystery, but the typical Mary Stewart humor and her excellent description of characters. The border collie is my favorite character and the true heroine. Any reader expecting a book will be disappointed, so enjoy them for typical short stories of the period."

  • Sometime in high school, I discovered Mary Stewart. I read everything she wrote and waited impatiently for her next novel. I read everything she ever published, including her children's books. Or so I thought.

On Thursday, October 12, 2017, I discovered that all of her Gothics were on sale for and in a rash moment, purchased them all.

To my amazement, I had never read this one or even knew of its existence. I really liked the first story about Perdita and Michael and wish she had turned it into a novel.

  • What a rare and wonderful pleasure to read some “new” Mary Stewart after all these years. I started reading her in high school and have devoured her words, at intervals, all my life. I was so sad when she died and I realized there wouldn’t be any more. And now there are. There aren’t enough of them, for sure, but these two stories are so beautifully written, the descriptions so vivid, the dialogue so delightful, that I’ll gladly take what I can get. It made me want to go back and reread all of her books again. What a lovely body of work she left for us. I’m so happy they’re available in and I hope a whole new generation of readers discovers Mary Stewart.
  • A pair of small gems. I got hold of a copy Wind Off the Small Isles several decades ago in a college library, but it's been next to impossible to find, and very expensive for the few copies in print. So glad to see this one on !
  • I actually have the hard back of this book, but the bonus is the extra short story from Mary Stewart!! I reread my copies of Mary Stewart a lot, so have at least 2 copies apiece. Some of the copies I bought back in the 60's when I first discovered her.
  • How I lived her work as a young girl, and still do. Two excellent new-to-me tales leaving me wanting a full novel with the character.
  • This was a typically very good book by one of my favorite authors. I didn't even know this book existed. It's not very long but well worth purchasing. There is a short story that comes along with it.
  • Her heroine is unselfconsciously brave, clever, and independent. The story is well plotted with some entertaining although somewhat improbable sequences. Little romance, just travel adventure.
