Answering Atheism How to Make the Case for God with Logic and Charity Trent Horn 9781938983436 Books Reviews

  • I think this is just too wordy and a bit boring though I haven't read the entire book yet so maybe I'll feel differently after more reading.
  • Hands-Down the best book I never wanted to read!
I struggle with the depth of most philosophical topics and I'm not the best at science, so I usually avoid discussions with atheists. The few I have engaged have ended in hurt feelings on one side or the other (or both) or have simply gone nowhere...mainly because I simply didn't understand the position of the other person. Then I read this book, half thinking it would be over my head like most others of this sort, but feeling it a necessary topic to learn. It has changed everything!
Trent does an amazing job at taking a complicated subject and presenting it to the common man, be he Christian or atheist. In a step-by-step, topic-by-topic, common sense/logical sequence, he simply (and correctly) presents both sides of the debate. He not only shows how to answer atheism, he shows where atheists find fault in the theistic claims and points out the necessity to address the bad attitudes on either side of the field. The subject matter is presented in such a calm and respectful way that I truly feel that I could hand this to any atheist without grimacing and worrying about anything uncharitable bruising the eyes and ego of the would-be reader.
He takes it a step further by providing some 50+ pages of end notes, where he goes into more scientific/philosophical depth/detail.
Whether you are an average Joe Christian (or even an atheist), or a learned and practiced apologist, this is an excellent book that is both easy to understand, and complex enough to truly "Answer Atheism".
  • Answering Atheism, by Trent Horn, is one of my first forays into the world of christian apologetic's, and I must say that i was greatly impressed by manner in which Mr. Horn presents his argument for the existence of god, as well as how respectful he was towards those resting on the other side of the argument, namely atheists and agnostics, which is not something that you always see when debating such a sensitive topic.

Overall, I would highly recommend Answering Atheism By Trent Thorn to anyone interested about the logical arguments that can be raised in favor of the existence of god theism, whether they be a Christian interested in apologetic's, an agnostic who is curious about both sides of the issues, or even an atheist who is curious as to why so many people are convinced of the reality of god.

So with that said, peace out, enjoy the book, and god bless.
  • Great! Airtight arguments! Trent Horn is fantastic! He expertly spot and squarely deal not only the tip but the entire bulk of the seemingly iceberg yet cracky arguments of the atheists.
  • The book is conversational, objective, and readable. After addressing objections to theism, Horn defends the contingency, fine-tuning, kalam, and moral arguments, along with the significance of subjective experience.

    A few things bothered me.
    1. Aquinas's arguments are given very little serious attention.
    2. Horn writes, "Saying one can prove God’s existence is shorthand for saying that the balance of evidence in favor of God’s existence outweighs the evidence against God’s existence." This stands in stark contrast to the metaphysical demonstration advocated by Thomistic theists and rejected by mechanistic-materialistic worldviews like that of Dawkins. In my opinion, this is an unnecessary concession to the Agnostic worldview.
    3. The book is a bit short. I finished it in a couple days.

Overall, I'd say this work is a sufficient introduction to the arguments for and against God's existence; however, by itself, it is insufficient for one who seeks a deep and serious examination of such questions.
  • Christian apologetics has been my avocation for the past 30 years. I've read dozens of apologetic books, many which are excellent, however Answering Atheism is on a different level. The way Mr. Horn presents his arguments clearly and will enable even those reluctant to engage in apologetics. Although I am not Catholic, the methods in this book will apply to anyone wanting to step out for Christ. Most highly recommended.
  • Definitely a dense read. I appreciated the little "review" sections at the end of each chapter - they kept me on track and summarized a LOT of arguments and quotes and ideas quite nicely.
  • Trent horn is a very intelligent man. This book is mostly over my head I was looking for a book with much more simple everyday answers to atheism.
